JOHN INMAN

“He was one of the loveliest, kindest men I’ve ever had the pleasure to share a stage with. He put a smile on everyone’s face and I was honoured to be his friend.”-Billy Pearce

A Tribute to John Inman
30th September 2007

“I am sure that John would have been very touched by the tribute to him on Sunday night. Many stars appeared on stage and in the audience together with many of the his fans to celebrate his remarkable career and charity achievements.

A large distinguished photograph adorned the stage of John as King Rat in 1993 in his full robes.

Wendy Richard opened the evening with her personal memories and the fun they had on ‘Are You Being Served’. Trevor Bannister made an appearance as did Frank Thornton exclaiming “Don’t worry, I’m not going to sing!” They both gave their personal messages of working with John. Frank fondly remembered his dance scene with John in ‘Top Hats and Tails’

For me, there were several highlights to the evening, one of which was Lee Bradley who sang Puccini’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ so beautifully and a salute from him to John at the end was a lovely gesture. Another outstanding singing performance came from ‘The Four Fivers’ who sang a wonderful and emotional rendition of ‘One Voice’.

Act one finished with the great Danny La Rue, who sang several songs, including his own presentation of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and although he is in his 80s, Danny delivered a powerful performance. He gave a very poignant speech sending his love to John and Ron and saying we all love and miss him.

Jean Ferguson read a poem she had written about some of the past sarcastic remarks John had made to her which was very amusing and you could almost hear John saying the words.

Bobby Davro topped the bill and has a hit with the audiance with his comic quips and marvelous stage presence. With comedians and singers throughout the show, this was a real variety of entertinment and an evening fitting for the memory of the wonderful John Inman.”
