hellos I am not sure if this is a continuation of an older forum or not but none the less I am happy to be here among other fans of the show. My question is,  I was watching recently and I kept hearing again a few times the name Bepo or Beppos maybe? and I remember once they mentioned the Oklahoma Pancake House, were these real places?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay-so busy with life in general..

Welcome to the forum!

No this is not a continuation of an older forum-just a brand new one for AYBS fans to talk about anything AYBS.

Concerning Beppos-maybe you are referring to this?

Concerning Oklahoma Pancake House:

My guess is that it's a fictional place since they probably could not mention real commercial places like many shows.

Hope this helps!

Just for fun, I tried to track down a few of the episodes where an outside cafe / restaurant was mentioned.

So far:

S2E1 "The clock" - Mr. Lucas and Mr. Humphries say they stopped at the Oklahoma Pancake House for a "Cup of Cocoa and a Danish pastry" before arriving at Mr. Grainger's party.

S2E3 "Think Tank" - Captain Peacock arrives late to the morning meeting and says he stopped at "Beppos" to get a cup of coffee.

S4E1 "No Sale" - The staff has to arrive earlier than normal and Captain Peacock says he stopped by "Fred's Cafe" to get a "Bacon Butty" for breakfast.

S4E3 "Forward Mr. Grainger" - (Again) Captain Peacock arrives late and says he had to stand in line at "Beppos" to get a cup of coffee.

S4E6 "What A Tangled Web" - Captain Peacock says he took Mr. Rumbold's secretary (again) to Beppos (Bethos?) cafe for a coffee. It actually sounds more like "bethos" in this episode.

S6E3 "Happy Returns" - In the canteen, the staff celebrates Mr. Grace's birthday and Mr. Grace prepares to personally serve them their meals. However, he first makes it clear that he and his secretary are passing on the canteen lunch and instead "lunching at The Savoy":

Mr. Grace: For what you are about to receive, may you be truly grateful.

Mr. Rumbold: Surely sir, you mean for what WE are about to receive?

Mr. Grace: No, for what YOU are about to receive. We're lunching at the Savoy, aren't we dear?"

Doing a quick search, it appears that there IS a Savoy Restaurant in London. In fact, it says that the famous chef Gordon Ramsay has owned it / been involved with it for some time, however the restaurant/hotel originally opened in 1889.

S7E1 "The Junior" - Mrs. Slocombe asks Captain Peacock privately if he REALLY was in the army with Mr. Goldberg. Captain Peacock said it was a long time ago and asks if Mrs. Slocombe remembers who she worked with at "Lyons with she was a nippy".

Apparently "Lyons" was a chain of restaurants where the waitresses were called "nippys".

S9E2 "Conduct Unbecoming" - Yet another one, Captain Peacock takes Mr. Rumbold's secretary out to the "Ritz" for breakfast. Turns out it is another famous hotel/restaurant that has a long standing history in London.

Apparently they WERE actually able to mention famous restaurants in London on the show. It would be free advertising so I would imagine the businesses would be fine with it, or perhaps they even paid the studio to have their business mentioned on one of the highest rated shows on TV.

There are other clothing/department stores mentioned throughout the series that were real stores in London, so it makes sense some of the restaurants were real as well.
