I, personally, really liked this movie. The performances of Mollie Sugden, Wendy Richard, and John Inman were just incredible. The other actors did well too. I think my favourite scene in the movie would be when Mr. Lucas put the clacking teeth in the dummies' shorts and they clamped on to Mr. Humphries' hand. I found that hilarious!

@mrhumphries The teeth scene is my favorite too! 😀

There were a few other good scenes in the movie as well.

@admin You mean like the one at the end, where they were sending up a balloon with a message? Oh, and I also liked the part where Mrs. Slocombe was getting her photo taken. Lots of people didn't like this movie, and I can't see why. 🤨

The movie was certainly interesting to watch. Honestly, it took some time to get used to the fact that there was no laugh track, but of course now I don't even notice it anymore.

My opinion is that they were using much of the movie as an advertisement to get a lot more people watching the series, hence the reason they used so many repeat jokes/situations/themes from the show itself.

Unfortunately, I think it would have been much better received if they had simply written a brand new script, which would have delighted current fans and also brought new fans on board as well. There might have even been a sequel.

One other issue is that the movie takes quite awhile to get going, whereas the regular episodes ran at a much faster pace. Part of the reason for this is that they had to introduce the characters slowly in the movie with the assumption that there would be many movie-goers that had never watched the show before.

I really enjoyed the 'upgraded' sets in the movie, and I thought it was great that we FINALLY get to see a camera shot showing the "fourth wall" of the department floor.

While Mrs. Slocombe is trying to get down from the lift, the camera shows us a view of the opposite direction from behind her shoulder, which normally would be where the audience sits during the regular series.

During the show, we are given plenty of evidence that the floor extends far beyond the cameras and likely has other departments on the same floor as the ladies and gents. You occasionally see extras walking off that way instead of exiting via the lift or stairs, particularly in S4E6 where Mrs. Slocombe runs off in that direction after her 'interview' with Mrs. Peacock.

All in all, I still enjoy watching the movie from time to time as it does have some great moments. I particularly liked that Mr. Harman got to stay in his own private suite the entire time - we are often given the impression throughout the show that he has many side jobs/hustles going all the time in addition to his regular job, not to mention the over-time, and so his income is actually far superior to the sales staff.

My favorite part was most likely the entire outside dinner scene, particularly the note passing, which I thought was very entertaining.

One of the aspects of this movie I always enjoyed was the simple fact that they spent so much time OUTSIDE the department store with different surroundings.

I always thought this was something lacking in later seasons of the show. It was remarkable how many wonderful scripts they were able to come up with while using only limited stage sets; however, as the show became more popular, it would have been nice to see them expand the scope of the department store and even have another regular location besides the main floor, canteen, and Mr. Rumbold's office.

Of course, they eventually went all out and changed everything with Grace and Favour, but I think more could have been done for seasons 8-10 of AYBS.

A question to other members: What other locations or 'hang outs' might the show have added for the staff to use?

Just as an example, they could have used the room from "The Club" as a regular place for the staff to gather in later seasons.

@ChangingFloors A pub visit after work now and then would have been fun!

@admineml2 Yes, in fact this was even mentioned several times during the show.

For example, in the episode "Conduct Unbecoming", Mr. Humphries returns to the canteen after having "one too many" at the pub.

It would have been great just to switch out between the pub and the canteen once in awhile for more variety.

They could have even added another regular character (The Bartender) as well for the staff to interact with.

Certainly a good idea, in fact an entire episode could have been written just to introduce the new location and how it would play into the show.

@changingfloors Mr Grainger played a funny bartender in "Closed Circuit". I think Mr Harmon would have made a good bartender too since he did have a bartendinhg role in Thriller-A Coffin for the Bride with Helen Mirren!

@admineml2 Mr. Harmon, of course, would be a great choice as he is indeed the "jack of all trades" on the show.

It would then be quite funny for the staff to suddenly find out that he's ALSO a bartender in addition to his many other side gigs.

Another great guest that could have become a regular on the show and played a great bartender would have been Gorden Kaye (S7E4).

His character as the bartender could have even played into his original appearance on the show, which was as a photographer for the paparazzi.

Now retired from his previous profession, he talks about the various individuals he's attempted to photograph over the years when the staff comes in.

The pub could even have funny/awkward pictures on display that he tried to take while hiding the camera.
